Layout Matters More Than Finishes
A kitchen remodel is the one project people ask us about most, and it is also the one where layout matters more than finishes. Before we talk about door styles, we want to know where you set the groceries down, who does the dishes, and whether two people can be in there at once without a traffic jam. Most kitchens here run 8 to 12 weeks from demo to final walkthrough.
That order matters more than it sounds like it does. We have walked into kitchens where somebody spent forty thousand dollars on cabinets and appliances and still does not like the room, because the island sits nine inches too close to the range and two people cannot pass behind each other. Finishes are the part you see in photographs. Layout is the part you feel every morning for the next fifteen years.
One more thing worth saying early. In most homes built before about 2000, the kitchen is not too small — it is too closed off. Opening it to the dining or living space usually does more for how the whole house feels than any cabinet upgrade, and it is often cheaper than people expect. Unless the wall is carrying load, in which case it is not, and there is a beam and an engineer involved. We will tell you which one you have before you get attached to an idea.
What A Kitchen Remodel Actually Includes
Bids vary wildly because “kitchen remodel” means different things to different companies. Here is what sits inside ours, so you have something concrete to compare other bids against.
Always included
- Demolition, disposal and daily site cleanup
- Cabinet layout drawings you approve before anything is ordered

- A real lighting plan — ambient, task and under-cabinet

Three Levels, And What Separates Them
Kitchens in Cache Valley run $20,000 to $90,000+. That is a wide range because the word covers very different projects. These are the three we actually build, and the thing that moves you between them is almost never the finishes.
Refresh
Same footprint, same plumbing. Semi-custom cabinets in a stock finish, quartz counters, tile backsplash, new sink and faucet, updated lighting and paint. Nothing moves, and that is what keeps it here.
Mid-Range
Where most of ours land. Minor layout changes, an island added or resized, semi-custom cabinets with real organizers, quartz, new flooring, a proper lighting plan on new circuits, and an upgraded appliance package.
High-End
Full custom cabinetry, a wall removed and beamed, relocated plumbing, stone with a waterfall detail, panel-ready appliances, integrated lighting, and usually a butler pantry or coffee bar.
What Usually Goes Wrong, And When
Three things account for most of the trouble in a kitchen remodel. All three are predictable, which means the only real question is whether your contractor tells you about them in week one or week six.
Appliances picked too late
Cabinets get built around appliances, not the other way around, and cabinets are the single biggest driver of how long your kitchen takes. Stock cabinets arrive in days. Semi-custom runs three to five weeks. Fully custom is six to ten weeks or longer depending on the shop. Choose appliances in week two, not week eight — a refrigerator an inch wider than planned means a new cabinet run, and that restarts the clock.
The countertop gap
Counters cannot be templated until the cabinets are physically installed and level. Fabrication needs the real measurement off the real cabinets. The crew measures, then the stone goes into fabrication for another one to two weeks. Cabinets installed, then template, then fabricate, then install. That sequence alone accounts for four to eight weeks of your project, and nobody can compress it.
What is behind the wall
On homes built before 1990 we budget 10 to 15 percent for what turns up — ungrounded wiring, a vent stack inside the wall you wanted opened, subfloor that has been wet for years. We would rather say that now than discover it with you standing there in week four.
We Might Not Be The Right Fit
We would rather lose the job now than three weeks into a design phase. If any of these describe you, say so on the call and we will point you somewhere better.
You want a swap under $20,000
That is a real project and a good one. It is just not what we are set up for, and a cabinet refacing company will do it faster and cheaper than we can.
You want to start next week
Design, selections and permitting come first. A realistic kitchen start is two to three months from the first call, and anyone promising sooner is skipping something.
You want the lowest bid
We are usually not it. What we are is specific about what is included, which is exactly why our number sometimes reads higher than one that quietly leaves things out.
You want to run the job yourself
If you are acting as your own general contractor and want us for one trade, we are not a fit. We do not sub ourselves into someone else’s schedule.
Questions We Get About Kitchens
Eight to twelve weeks for most full kitchens, demo to final walkthrough. You will be without a sink and range for the bulk of that. We set up a temporary kitchen on day one — usually the fridge, a microwave and a folding table somewhere out of the dust — and we tell people to budget for eating out more than they think they will.
Yes, and almost everyone does. We seal the work area with zip walls, run air scrubbers, and keep a clear path in and out. It is dusty and loud between eight and four, and quiet after that. Families with small kids or anyone working from home on calls should plan around the demo week specifically.
No. Plenty of clients bring their own selections and we are glad to build around them. We ask for specs early so cabinets are ordered correctly, and we do not warranty owner-supplied items or the labor to reinstall one that shows up wrong or damaged.
You hear about it the same day, with a price and options, before we go any further. Nothing gets buried and nothing gets done and billed after the fact. On pre-1990 homes we tell you up front to hold 10 to 15 percent back for exactly this.
Yes. We pull them and we meet the inspectors. A kitchen with electrical or plumbing changes needs a permit in Logan and across Cache County, and skipping it is how a remodel turns into a problem at resale.
